Fruit flies – how to keep them out of your home!

Fruit flies are a common pest in households across Australia, so the team at Asset Pest Management are here with a few handy tips to help avoid these pests! While these tips may keep fruit flies out of your house temporarily, these are not as effective as a proper pest control treatment by Asset Pest Management. For more information on how to deter pests from your home, contact one of our friendly team members on 07 3201 1660 or 0418 157 926

1. Fruit Jar

As per their name, fruit flies love fruit, making it the perfect solution to lure them into a trap. Place a jar of fruit out and create a paper cone to place in the top of the jar (point side down). The flies will go in through the opening of the cone and will then be trapped in the jar with no way out.

2. Remove any exposed produce

Leaving out food sources for fruit flies is the number one way to attract them into your home. To avoid this, make sure you keep any food products sealed and stored in a fridge or pantry to keep these pests from spreading.

3. The red wine trap

Red wine is full of those fruity juices that fruit flies are so addicted to. This trap is the same as the ‘fruit trap’ but substituting the fruit for red wine.

4. Soap and apple cider

Similarly, to the jar and paper cone trap, this version requires a mix of apple cider and soap to entice the flies. But instead of the paper cone, place cling wrap over the top of the jar and poke a few holes in it for the flies to enter through.

5. Essential Oil Deterrent

Despite smelling amazing to us, essential oils can be used as a deterrent to fruit flies. Scents such as lemongrass, eucalyptus and peppermint can be mixed in with some water and sprayed around the house to deter flies – and has the bonus of making your house smell beautiful!
