The name is derived from the silver-like appearance of their bodies and the fish-like movement it uses to get around. Continue reading for more information and some tips on preventing silverfish infesting your home.
Why are they a pest?
While silverfish don’t harbour any diseases, and are not dangerous to your family, they are an incredibly destructive insect. Their main diet consists of carbohydrates, but they’re not as fussy as humans. These little buggers will consume anything containing a carbohydrate, including your food, books, paper, clothing and more! They love damp dark spaces, so your pantry and wardrobes are their favourite hiding places. They are known to contaminate pantry staples with a vengeance.
How can you prevent them?
Silverfish love damp spaces, so ventilation is your number one weapon against them. If you are unable to ventilate their favourite spaces, damp rid or similar is an incredible resource. It is highly recommended that you inspect any old rugs, books or clothing for silverfish before bringing them into your home. Direct sunlight also kills these pets. Our number one recommendation?
